SC’s decision on NRO not in line with law: Asma

Former Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president Asma Jehangir on Tuesday said she was opposed to the NRO but the Supreme Court’s decision on it was not in line with the law and the constitution. Talking to reporters, she said there were several people involved in the NRO, adding that the SC could do anything at present. “The institutions should exercise restraint for the sake of the nation,” she said. Asma said Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani had appointed Aitzaz Ahsan his counsel. The matter had reached such a proportion that “our institutions will have to think about it seriously for the cause of the nation and survival of democracy”, she said. She said former president Pervez Musharraf must be sent to jail but those who joined hands with him should also be put to trial. “It won’t be in national interest if we remained buried in the past,” she said, adding, “Time has come to start thinking about the survival of the people rather than creating a clash among the institutions.” She said Islamabad should be made into such a capital that people could hear messages of peace from here rather than of confrontation.
