The Lahore High Court on Monday summoned the Lahore District Coordination Officer on January 24, in a petition challenging the decision of the Punjab government to close marriage halls at 10:00 p.m. The court also sought a report from the DCO and other respondents. Chief Justice Azmat Saeed passed the order on a petition filed by a marriage hall owner and Lahore Marriage Halls Association general secretary who termed the government’s decision as undemocratic and unjust.
The petitioner contended in his petition that the decision had no legal cover and should be declared illegal. He submitted that if it necessary the government should fix a deadline at midnight as functions were usually held between 10 and 12 at night. He said the deadline had destroyed the business of marriage halls while causing problems for the families and their guests.
