KWSB’s gone back on its word, not paying bills: KESC

The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) has not paid its electricity bills for the current, thereby violating its undertaking in a meeting at the Governor’s House on November 26 last year, the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) said on Monday. “Also, the commitment of direct or indirect payment or adjustment of the water board’s longstanding arrears that have now swelled to over Rs 16 billion was not realised either,” the power utility said in a press statement.
Refuting KWSB’s claims in respect of “settlement” of dues, the KESC said that despite the nonpayment of the current bills, it has only cut off power supply to the board’s offices and its officials’ residences, but it has not been suspended to water pumping stations in the larger interest of the city’s population.
The KESC also clarified that the settlement to adjust the water board’s dues towards its public sector customers was meant for the previous arrears of the power utility. However, at the same time, the government had directed the board in every meeting held at the Governor’s House to regularly pay its bills but that directive has not been followed yet. The KESC asked the water board to immediately start paying its monthly bills as per the agreement at the Governor’s House without further delay. The KESC expressed concern over the irresponsible attitude of the water board, which has become the largest defaulter of power bills.
