Food and culture lovers will not have to wait for long, as it has been decided to inaugurate the much-lingered project of Fort Road Food Street on January 21, Pakistan Today has learnt. The food street, which faced many hurdles and crossed a couple of deadlines, is finally ready to be opened for public on Saturday, as Hamza Shahbaz visited the Fort Road on Monday. According to well-placed sources, Hamza held a meeting with all major stakeholders of the food street and finally decided to inaugurate the well awaited tourist spot cum cultural hub of the city. As many as 25 buildings have been restored, hiring the services of renowned architects and fine arts experts.
The Fort Road Food Street is a 1.4km long V-shaped street with small food outlets along with the wall of Badshahi Mosque giving a deep cultural ambiance to the street. Around Rs 40 million have been spent on the food street, while critics claim that the Fort Road Food Street would be superior to all other food streets made in the metropolitan of Punjab in taste and culture due to its historic culture. Unfortunately, it was said to be opened around November 19 last year, which was later changed to around December 31.
The delay was said to be made due to power and gas outages which forced the project to cross two deadlines.
The establishment of the Fort Road Food Street was a part of the Punjab government’s plan to raise 9 food streets at various locations of the administrative towns of the provincial capital including Gulberg, Shalimar, Nishtar, Samanabad, Allama Iqbal, Wagha, Aziz Bhatti, Ravi and Data Gunj Baksh.
What benefit will ordinary people gain out of it? Only the upstarts will have a chance to show-off a little.
