Former Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Aitzaz Ahsan said on Saturday that the impeachment of the president would not pose any threat to democracy in the country.
Talking to journalists, he denied the reports that he was working for any connection between the judiciary and the government.
Replying a query about his role as a bridge between the government and the judiciary, he dispelled the speculations and said he was not playing any such role.
The prominent layer said that his view point on writing letter to Swiss authorities to reopen graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardai was different from that of party. He said according to Vienna Convention the president enjoyed immunity.
He said he was not offered to become Senate chairman or prime minister. Ahsan said the Supreme Court of Pakistan had not given six options to the government instead the options were for the larger bench of the apex court.
He said there was no threat to democracy in the case if president was impeached or the prime minister was removed through constitutional means.
He said according to article 248, the president enjoyed blanket immunity. Replying a question, he said in his view point the government should write letter to the Swiss government.
Ahsan said that he had applied for party ticket for upcoming Senate election.
