National Assembly(NA) standing committee on Human rights has expressed its concerns over the law and order situation in the country particularity Karachi and directed the IGs of the provinces to take immediate steps in this regard.
NA standing committee on Human Rights meeting was chaired by Senator Afrasiab Khan Khatak, in which Standing committee resented the increasing incidents of street crimes saying that such crimes are increasing with every passing day but police is reluctant to take any action against it.
Secretary Human Rights said that police officials are also involved in such crimes.
Standing committee directed the Ministry Of Interior to present the report regarding the Saleem Shahzad case.
Committee also showed its concerns over threats given to Hafiz Rashid Ahmed and directed the ministry to submit inquiry report after through investigation. Committee also directed to provide security to Hafiz Rashid and to deploy the Frontier Constabulary personnel at his house.
During the meeting of the committee, Mian Raza Rabbani raised the issue of torture over innocent people in the police custody and committee directed the Director Pak police bureau Tahir Javed to take steps. Tahir Javed told the committee that department is discouraging such black sheeps and often-disciplinary action has been taken against responsible. He said that department has initiated different courses for the officials to aware them regarding this issue.
Secretary human Rights said that we should change our police culture.
Official of Sindh police told the committee about the issue of three Hindu doctors, which were killed in Sindh and told that it was a rape case and police, has arrested seven accused persons in this case while surprise raids are continued to arrest the other four persons.
Senator SM Zafar said that we are not satisfied with the report regarding the matter of minorities’ rights in the country and directed the concerned department to submit through investigative report over this issue.
During the meeting, police official informed the committee that media has exaggerated case of murder of Dr Baqir Shah and media is linking it with Kharotabad incident. However, standing committee was unsatisfied and directed the Home secretary and Inspector General Balochistan to give detailed report over it.
Inspector Islamabad while briefing the committee over the security of the capital and told that there are fifty eight police pickets in the capital and department with the assistance of ICT and CDA is working on project to provide shelters to the officials deployed at these pickets.
Standing committee also discussed the issue of an Indian national who got married with a Pakistani girl and requested for citizenship. Members were agreed to not to allow his report saying it is not possible on practical grounds.
