Prime Minister’s Advisor for Human Rights Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar said on Wednesday the government is taking numerous steps to curb human rights violation, especially against women and children. Talking to APP he said the Ministry of Human Rights was committed to the protection, promotion and practice of human rights to foster peace and democracy in the country.
To a question, he said 2,587 rape and 6,242 murder cases were reported from Punjab in 2010 thus placing the province at the top of Human Rights (HR) violation list of the provinces. He said the cases of HR violation reported from Punjab were indiscriminately more than the figure reported from other provinces that shows lack of commitment of the provincial government in curbing the HR violations.
He said the ministry had done lot of work on legislation to protect women’s rights. To another question, he explained that the Ministry has created funds for victims like the Human Rights Relief Fund, Diyat, Arsh and Daman Fund, Human Rights Revolving Fund, Women in Distress and Detention Fund.
