Senior Supreme Court (SC) Advocate Nasrullah Warraich, 70, was gunned down at his doorstep by two unidentified motorcyclists in the Gulshan-e-Ravi Police precincts on Monday.
All lawyer associations have announced a complete strike today (Tuesday) against Warraich’s killing. According to details, at around 7pm, the lawyer went to his door after someone knocked it. Suddenly, he was shot in his head on which his family rushed to the door and found him in a pool of blood. He was rushed to Sir Gangaram Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police and rescue officials shifted the body to the morgue for autopsy. Gulshan-e-Ravi Police Sub-Inspector Ashfaq said that according to initial investigation and eye witnesses, two or three young men knocked at the lawyer’s house door. As Warraich opened the door one killer introduced himself as Shahid and asked the deceased to call his son Tahir, as they wanted to give him some documents regarding a case. “But as Nasrullah was going inside, one of them fired at the lawyer, who was shot in his head and went unconscious”, Ashfaq said.
He said that the killers managed to flee, adding that police have not registered any case yet because no complaint was received from the deceased’s family. Sources said that the killing might be result of an old enmity but Warraich’s family denied it. After the killing, the deceased’s son Tahir was given police protection. A large number of lawyers reached Warraich’s house to condole his death. The Lahore Bar Association (LBA), Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) and Punjab Bar Council (PbBC) condemned Warraich’s murder, who was a former Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) executive committee chairman, and demanded an inquiry into the matter.
Punjab Governor Latif Khosa also visited the Mayo Hospital morgue and ordered police to arrest the criminals as early as possible. He spoke to the deceased’s family and ensured full cooperation. Talking to journalists, Khosa said that the deceased was his good friend and his killing questioned the Punjab government’s performance. Warraich was survived by four sons and three daughters.
