Vegetable, chicken prices soar

The prices of vegetables increased sharply in Sunday bazaars of the city and became a cause of alarm amongst the consumers.
There has been sharp increase in the prices of onion while the prices of other vegetables like cauliflower, lemon, ginger and garlic also increased. The prices of chicken also witnessed increase of Rs 16 per kg and it was sold for Rs 206 per kg.
The prices of onions are increasing on daily basis due to less supply from the farms. The onions were sold for Rs 50-55 per kg, whereas, last week it was available for Rs 42 per kg. The shopkeepers said due to high prices of onions, their sale volumes also decreased. “People are purchasing less due to high prices and it has caused a decrease in our sales,” said a shopkeeper Wajid Hussain adding the prices of onions has increased sharply in the recent two weeks.
Similarly, the prices of ginger increased by Rs 10 per kg and it were sold for Rs 85 per kg. The price of garlic increased by Rs 5 per kg and it was sold for Rs 80 per kg.
Cauliflower was sold for Rs 35-40 per kg and the prices of lemon increased by Rs 5 per kg and it was available for Rs 42-45 per kg.
The prices of tomatoes and potatoes remained stable and it was available for Rs 60 per kg and Rs 22 per kg respectively.
The prices of apples increased by Rs 5 per kg and it were sold for Rs 150 per kg. The low grade apples were also available for Rs 70 to Rs 100 per kg. The price of bananas decreased by Rs 5 per dozen and it was sold for Rs 55 per dozen.
