An application has been moved in the Lahore High Court challenging the appointment of Dr Mujahid Kamran as the Punjab University (PU) Acting Vice-Chancellor (VC) following his retirement from the post on January 2.
The civil miscellaneous application was filed by Dr Mughees-ud-Din, a candidate for the vice-chancellor position, through his counsel Asad Manzoor Butt.
His petition called for a restraining order against Kamran’s appointment to the post. The petitioner contended that Kamran was appointed the vice chancellor for four years, according to the section 14 of the PU Act. However, he could not be granted an extension after retirement nor could he be allowed to serve as part of a stop-gap arrangement.
The petition demanded that the appointment notification be cancelled by declaring it unlawful.
The petitioner said LHC Justice Sheikh Ahmad Farooq had, on hearing the main petition, issued notices last Monday to the Punjab Higher Education Commission Secretary and other respondents, despite which Kamran continued to serve as the VC.
The counsel alleged that Kamran wanted to continue as a stopgap arrangement to facilitate his wife or cousin. He asked the court to issue directions to bar the extension in the VC’s contract to give new candidates the opportunity to serve the university.
Raymond Davis’ release
challenged in LHC: The release of the US undercover agent, Raymond Davis, who killed two Pakistani citizens in February last year, was challenged in the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Saturday. The mother-in-law of Fahim, who was among the two shot dead by Davis, filed the petition in the court.
The petition stated that Davis could not be released unless both the parties concerned pardoned him.
“He has been released without my pardoning him. Legal proceedings will be initiated against him,” she said. Raymond Davis was freed after striking a dubious deal with the government while the nation speculated about the terms of the deal.
