Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif will conduct the interviews of the three candidates recommended by the search committee for appointment as Punjab University (PU) vice chancellor (VC), Pakistan Today learnt on Friday. The three recommended candidates, Dr Zafer Iqbal Jadoun, Dr Jamil Anwer and PU Acting VC Professor Dr Mujahid Kamran will appear before the Punjab CM. Sources said the decision was taken to remove the concerns of parliamentarians and pro-Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) teachers. The CM Secretariat had informed the CM regarding the search committee’s recommendations and he advised the officials to stop the further development till he returns from Turkey. The issue had been raised by Member Provincial Assembly (MPA) Tanvir Ashraf Kaira and the law minister had assured the parliamentarians that no third divisioner would be appointed as the PU VC. The CM’s decision was appreciated by the candidates and the PU faculty members, who hoped that the CM would remove their concerns regarding the recommendation of third divisioner Dr Zafer Ali Jadoun by the search committee. The sources said that the CM would select one candidate and the summary would be sent to the governor, who is the chancellor of public universities of the province. A PU faculty member said that the CM and the Lahore High Court (LHC) should investigate the profiles of each candidate, who have been accused of involvement in cases of sexual harassment and financial corruption.
