The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) organised rallies in all major cities of the country on Friday to protest against the gas and electricity load-shedding, inflation and corruption.
On the appeal of JI ameer Munawar Hasan, the JI leaders and workers staged sit-ins outside the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) offices in major cities and protested outside mosques after the Friday prayers. In Lahore, the JI workers took out a rally at the Multan Road led by JI Deputy Secretary General Dr Farid Paracha. Addressing the protesters, who were holding banners and chanting slogans against the government, Dr Paracha said that the government was increasing the power and fuel tariffs on daily basis to fill up their pockets and destroy the national institutions. He said that despite the discovery of huge gas and coal resources in the country, the people were forced to live in stone-age, without power, gas and petrol. The poor were committing suicides due to the deprivation of basic necessities, he added.
