The Islamabad High Court (IHC) issued an arrest warrant on Friday for the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) Registrar Brig (retd) Salim Daud, on a contempt of court petition filed by a student of Altamash Dental College Hospital Karachi.
The petitioner wanted to transfer to NUST, but her admission was blocked despite court orders.
Justice Azeem Khan Afridi was hearing the contempt of court petition in which the counsel for the petitioner Advocate Ghulam Mustafa Kandwal informed the court that his client, Hina Batool was a medical sciences student at Altamash Dental College but gained admission to NUST on February 5, 2011.
“After about two months, on April 22, 2011, the university administration cancelled the migration letter of Hina Batool without giving any reason, after which Batool filed a writ petition in the IHC against the university officials,” he submitted. The petitioner cited the NUST registrar and others as respondents. Ghulam Mustafa informed the court that on her writ, the IHC chief justice ordered the university registrar to grant her admission into the institute. He added that instead of complying with the court’s orders, the NUST administration filed an appeal in the Supreme Court (SC) against the IHC’s orders. However, on November 28th the SC rejected the university’s plea. “Even after receiving orders by the apex court the NUST registrar did not comply with the IHC directions,” he said. He requested the court to take strict action against the register for defying the court orders. The NUST counsel Advocate Abdul Rasheed Awan argued that the process was underway for giving admission to Hina Batool and some time was required in this regard.
After hearing the arguments, Justice Azeem Khan Afridi issued arrest warrants of Brig (retired) Salim Daud and adjourned the hearing for three days. The court also directed the police that officials above the rank of the superintendent of police shall take the NUST registrar into custody.
