The Banaras Flyover will be opened for two-way traffic this week, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Administrator Muhammad Hussain Syed said on Friday.
“Work on adjoining roads, the Abdullah College Roundabout and shifting of water and sewerage lines would also be completed soon,” he added. Syed was talking with Technical Services Director General Altaf G Memon and other officers of the Works and Services Department about the ongoing development works, especially the Banaras Flyover.
The administrator directed that the road at Abdullah College Roundabout should be completed on preferential basis so that the flow of surrounding traffic could be maintained.
Syed also instructed that water and sewerage lines should shifted within two days so that the construction of road could be completed as soon as possible.
Memon informed Syed that the pace of development work on both the ends of the Banaras Flyover – from the Abdullah Girls College to Orangi Town No 5 – and the repairing and reconstruction of roads beneath the flyover and the U-turn is satisfactory and the shifting of water and sewerage pipelines would also be completed in two days.
“The shifting of underground utility lines would make the road durable in the future,” he added.
The administrator said the construction of adjoining roads was made part of the project in order to solve the traffic problems in the area.
The Banaras Flyover has a length of 1,644 metres and a width of around 27 metres. A total of 862 pillars and 350 girders have been used in its construction.
The journey of progress in Karachi will continue and the KMC is making all possible efforts to speed it up. The opening of the Banaras Flyover for two-way traffic would felicitate millions of people residing in its nearby localities,” Syed said.
