Ambassador-designate to the US Sherry Rehman, who leaves for Washington early on Saturday on her new assignment, called on Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani here on Wednesday to discuss matters pertaining to her diplomatic responsibilities. “It may be mentioned that Sherry Rehman is leaving for USA soon to assume her diplomatic assignment there,” said a statement issued by the PM’s office.
Rehman was supposed to leave for Washington by the end of the current month but owing to the expected ‘breakthrough’ in Pakistan-US relations, she has been asked to reach the US capital in the next few days. “Ambassador Rehman is supposed to play her role for the success of the process of reconciliation between Islamabad and Washington and back the current military-to-military contacts between the two sides in order to do away with the impasse in their ties over the NATO air strikes in Mohmand agency,” said a Pakistani official, who asked not to be named. He said the ongoing secret talks between Islamabad and Washington had proved to be somewhat fruitful and once again there were chances that the relations would be put back on track as a result of the breakthrough.
