A three-member judicial commission probing the memogate controversy has issued notices to all the petitioners and respondents, including President Asif Ali Zardari, for January 9. The second meeting of the commission is scheduled to be held at the Islamabad High Court building on January 9, in which the attorney general will inform the commission about progress in obtaining data from Research In Motion, the Canada-based manufacturer of BlackBerry smartphones, pertaining to the communications between Husain Haqqani and Mansoor Ijaz.
The president has so far not submitted a reply to the Supreme Court during the preliminary hearing of the memo case despite the fact that Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lt General Ahmad Shuja Pasha submitted their replies. A reply on behalf of the federal government was, however, filed. The commission has already sent notices to former US national security adviser General James Jones and others. The first meeting of the commission, which decided to issue the notices, was held at the Islamabad High Court building. Meanwhile, Geo News reported on Wednesday that Mansoor Ijaz had agreed to come to Pakistan and appear before the commission provided he was given adequate security. The commission is headed by Balochistan High Court Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa and includes Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman and Sindh High Court Chief Justice Musheer Alam as its members. Despite being summoned, Haqqani did not appear before the commission in the first meeting.
