Adviser to PM admits to embezzlement in urea import

Confessing to embezzlement of large amounts in the import and distribution of urea at the government level, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Industries Basharat Raja on Tuesday said inquiry against the officials involved in the embezzlement was underway.
Talking to reporters, Raja said, “The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) were conducting inquiry against the officials who are involved in the embezzlement in the import and distribution process of urea,” adding that the inquiry report would be finalised in the next two to three days and the officials involved would be treated in the light of that report. However, he clarified that the embezzlement had taken place before the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid’s alliance with the ruling PPP.
To a query, He said 200 urea agencies had been suspended and fined. However, he said, it should be accepted that there was a political angle to the urea distribution and those who profited should be taken to task.
