The Inquiry Commission on Abbottabad Operation on Tuesday said it had retrieved around 187,000 documents from the compound allegedly used by al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad. “The documents recovered by the commission from the compound included diaries, letters and other important communication material,” a source said anonymously. The source said most of the documents were in Arabic and other languages and directives had been issued by the commission to the concerned authorities for their translation.
A large number of documents had already been taken away by US-led forces that raided the compound in Abbottabad on May 2, 2011.
The commission would finalise its recommendations after getting data from the documents and eventually the body would handover its report to the government.
It would be up to the government to decide on making the findings of the report public, the source added.
Meanwhile, the commission held an interactive discussion on Tuesday with PML-Q Secretary General Mushahid Hussain Sayed, Javed Chaudhry, Tahir Khalil, Tariq Chaudhry, Ikram Sehgal, Asif Bashir Chaudhry, Kanwar Muhammad Dilshad and Kamran Ishtiaq and sought their input on the covert US raid.
Justice (r) Javed Iqbal, former senior judge of the Supreme Court, presided over the proceedings of the commission, while Ashraf Jehangir Qazi and Lt Gen (r) Nadeem Ahmed attended. Meanwhile, in response to an invitation by the commission, Dr Mohammed Farooq Sattar, deputy convener of the MQM, conveyed regret on behalf of MQM chief Altaf Hussain for his inability to attend the discussion.
However, the MQM leader reposed complete confidence in the commission.
