The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a one-week-long deadline to the government and other concerned parties to implement its verdict on the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) case.
According to a private television channel, a five judge bench headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa took up the matter.
The Attorney General said the letter to the Swiss government could not be sent thus far as the issue at hand was postponed owing to the hearing of the NRO Review case. Replying to this, Justice Asif Khosa, leading the bench, questioned why a letter has not been written thus far now that the Review petition has been disposed of.
Justice Khosa said the court, in its last hearing, directed the prime minister to dispatch a new summary, as the previous summary comprised the government standpoint not to undertake the NRO implementation.
Justice Khosa also remarked the Secretary Law, who sought more time for new summary, was not present at the court despite having been summoned.
“Should the court lie in wait for the Secretary Law?” inquired Justice Khosa.
Arguing before the bench, National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecutor said that the bureau’s jurisdiction is the abuse of powers and that the Adnan Khawaja Case is a matter relating faulty appointment.
Appointing a matriculate person to that vital office is not a misuse of the powers, remarked Justice Asif Saeed Khosa.
The court also directed NAB chairman and bureau’s prosecutor to appear before the court in person along with the written report in the next hearing.
The court also remarked Ahmed Riaz Sheikh was a convicted person, hence inquiry into his re-appointment was required.
Moreover, the court summoned the acting Law Secretary who prepared the summary of Sheikh’s re-appointment.
