LHC PREPARES NOTICE AGAINST PU VC’S TERM EXTENSION: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday prepared to send notices to Punjab Higher Education Commission (HEC) Secretary and other respondents on a petition requesting the court to pass orders to restrain Punjab University Vice Chancellor (VC) Mujahid Kamran from holding the VC office after the expiry of his tenure on January 2.
Justice Sheikh Ahmad Farooq was hearing a petition filed by Dr Mughees-ud-Din, a candidate for the Vice Chancellorship, through his counsel Asad Manzoor Butt.
The court heard initial arguments by the petitioner counsel and issued pre-admission notices to the respondents, including Mujahid Kamran to decide the petition’s maintainability. The judge also sought reply from the Punjab Education Commission and others on the matter.
The petitioner submitted that Kamran’s contract expired on January 2, 2012, but the government was trying to give him an extension which he deemed was unconstitutional, as a Supreme Court judgment had declared extension after retirement from service illegal and unlawful.
He prayed the court issue directions to bar the VC’s contract extension or work as a stopgap arrangement so that new candidates might get an opportunity to serve the university.
