AIOU to attract highly qualified teachers

The regional directors’ conference of the Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) concluded here on Monday. The participants discussed university’s achievements, targets, planning and development. All the regional directors of the university from its 36 campuses across the country were present on the occasion. Prof Dr Nazir Ahmed Sangi, the vice-chancellor presided over the conference.
In his address, Dr Sangi said the remuneration of the tutors engaged in teaching various courses should be increased to a ‘reasonable level’ so as to attract highly qualified tutors. He said that all regional campuses of the university would soon be interconnected through state-of-the-art ICT internet.
Dr Sangi said a regional directors’ conference would be held two months before the commencement of each Semester in which all the directors would be required to give a presentation on the performance/achievements of their regions. He hoped that such sessions would help them find new ideas regarding university’s academic activities.
Dr Sangi said that no stone would be left unturned to eradicate illiteracy, poverty and unemployment from the society.
Dr Sangi said the AIOU was established with the main objectives of providing educational opportunities to masses and to those who could not leave their homes and jobs to study. He said the AIOU set up ‘Student Support Fund’ to help poor, deprived, needy and deserving students. He urged the regional directors to try their level best and seek donations for the support fund. Regarding students’ enrolment, he said, the AIOU was one of the largest universities of the world and it was providing education at par with the international standards and that too the doorsteps of its students.
In his remarks, Regional Services Director Dr Syed Abdul Siraj said the conference aimed to expand the university’s regional network in the rural areas of the country.
He said the AIOU was making progress rapidly under the ‘dynamic’ leadership of VC Dr Sangi.
The participants of the meeting were divided into five groups to devise future strategies on admission and mailing, exams, facility and resources, tutorial support and workshops, staffing and training, budgeting and payment. The groups chalked out those areas and came up with different suggestions and recommendations.
Dr Siraj thanked all the regional directors for their active participation in the conference and expressed hope that the outcome of the conference would be implemented in its ‘true spirit’ so that the University can cope with the requirement of the present times.
