The historic gathering in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh ostensibly proved that people still repose their confidence and trust in President Asif Ali Zardari, Sindh Information Minister Shazia Marri said on Friday.
She was addressing a press conference at the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Media Cell at the Bilawal House.
“It is the present government that restored the deposed judges including the chief justice of Pakistan following the Benazir Bhutto’s struggle for the freedom of judiciary,” she said.
Referring to Zardari’s message of a strong federation, stability of democracy and supremacy of the constitution, she said this is the only path for peace in the country and the present government would continue following it.
“The parliament fulfilled a longstanding demand of the Pakhtuns despite severe opposition from some quarters have the identity of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa to the NWFP,” she said.
Speaking on the issue of Balochistan, she said the present government not only seeks apology from the Baloch, but is also working on recruiting them in every organisation.
Criticising opponents, Marri said that they have no inkling as to what the harsh experiences of prisons and bitter realities are like.
“They are here because of plea bargain they had with the dictator,” she added.
Reiterating the parliament’s duty of protecting the constitution, Marri called for holding a trial of those who worked against the parliament.
“Raising finger at the parliament is tantamount to violating the constitution,” she added.
“Political parties play an important role in the success of democratic institutions and the PPP wants to strengthen political institutions.”
Replying to a question, the minister said President Zardari has made it clear that Pakistan is ready to talk with the international community on its terms and on equal basis. “We want a friendly relationship with every country,” she maintained.
