A large number of Punjab University Shia students under the banner of Imamia Students Organisation (ISO) protested against the Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT) on Friday. The protesters demanded Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif refrain from appointing a pro-Jamaat-e-Islami and pro-IJT vice chancellor in the PU, adding that it was a cause of security concern for hundreds of Shia students of the university.
The Shia students, condemning the IJT over the clash at PU that had left a number of Shia students injured, said that the attack on the Shia students over celebrating the ‘Youm-e-Hussain’ had proven that the university was in the hand of gangsters, while illegal IJT activists were present at the varsity.
The ISO students gathered in front of the Lahore Press Club and chanted slogans against the IJT activists who had attacked the Shia students a couple of days ago and stopped them from celebrating ‘Youm-e-Hussain’. The students held banners, demanding justice from the Punjab CM and security for the students. They also demanded legal action against the IJT activists who had attacked and used weapons against them.
The protesters said the torture of Shia students had opened the eyes of the Punjab CM and he should not appoint a pro-JI and pro-IJT VC as it would close the door of education for Shia students at the varsity. They alleged IJT activists had tortured parents of Shia students, who were hospitalised during the stone-throwing by IJT activists. The students said, on the one hand, the CM was distributing laptops amongst PU students to promote education, on the other hand, the JI was giving weapons to IJT activists to kill students. Meanwhile, the IJT activists also protested against the PU administration over the clash and alleged the administration had backed the incident and was promoting sectarianism.
