A three-day workshop on ‘Recent Advances in Chemistry for College Teachers’ was launched on Wednesday at Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU). The workshop was arranged by the AIOU Department of Chemistry in collaboration with Higher Education Commission (HEC) and was inaugurated by AIOU Vice Chancellor Dr Nazir Ahmed Sangi. College teachers from Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Jhelum, Pind Dadan Khan, Mithi, Tharparkar, Chakwal, Karachi and Hyderabad are participating in the workshop. Lectures will be held on ultra-violet visible spectroscopy, infra-red spectroscopy, polymers, semiconductors, supreconductors and composite material, modern inorganic materials, UV & IR instrumentation, sterochemistry and nano materials. Addressing the inaugural session Sangi said: “Obtaining education in science is the right of the people living in the remote parts of the country. The AIOU is trying its level best to provide opportunities to these people to learn science. “The AIOU is planning to start BSc programmes in remote areas of the country. Four science laboratories are also being established in its regional offices,” he said. In his address, Faculty of Sciences Dean Dr Nowshad Khan said: “College teachers should benefit from this useful workshop.” He invited all the participants of the workshop to visit physics and microbiology laboratories of the university. Chairperson/Workshop Coordinator Dr Naghmana Rashid highlighted aims of the workshop.
