A 22-year-old man has been arrested at Birmingham airport on suspicion of terrorism offences, West Midlands Police have said.
A West Midlands Police spokesman said the man was detained after officers were called to Birmingham International Airport at 1.24pm by security staff.
A force spokesman said: “A routine security check had taken place on the aircraft and of passengers of a flight which had stopped at Birmingham en route from Islamabad to Toronto.
“As a result, one man was detained and the aircraft is now subject to a more detailed examination. The man will be interviewed by police.”
A spokeswoman for Birmingham International Airport added: “We can confirm that following a routine security search of a transatlantic flight from Islamabad to Toronto, a passenger has been detained for questioning.”
The Airbus A310 aircraft, being operated by Pakistan International Airlines, arrived at Birmingham at 11.30am today.
The spokeswoman added: “The 192 passengers on board were all bound for Canada and were not entering UK. The airport is continuing to operate as normal.”
