The UK Border Agency received around 0.1 million visa applications from Pakistani nationals in 2010, its officials said on Monday.
They were speaking at the launch of the premium lounge service at the agency’s visa application centre. A global organisation, the UK Border Agency is operating in about 130 countries worldwide, including Pakistan to collect the visa applications. The agency launched the premium lounge service in partnership with its commercial partner Gerrys. The premium lounge provides personalised service for the submission of applications and passports for visa processing. The lounge offers a ready-to-use service with no prior appointment required through the call centre.
Applicants can take advantage of the fast, convenient and comfortable submission and free SMS alerts on the status of the application. The premium facilities are charged at Rs 3,000 inclusive of all taxes. The Ministry of Justice, UK has also introduced appeal fee charges for asylum and immigration appeals. Now the people, who want to appeal against a decision notice dated December 19 or later, would need to pay a fee. The appeal fee would apply to most categories of visas and decisions and any exemptions to the fees would be outlined by the Ministry of Justice.
Also from Monday, people will need to lodge their appeals at the tribunal in the UK, as the authorities announced that they will no longer accept appeals at any of the overseas visa application centres.
Talking to the media, the UK Border Agency regional manager for Pakistan, Mandy Ivemy said that the agency is committed to providing a first class visa service to Pakistan.
“With the opening of the Karachi premium lounge, we now have the premium lounge service available at all visa application centres in Pakistan,” she said.
“We have also updated our visa services website, including specific pages for visa applicants in Pakistan and launched a priority Business Select Scheme for our corporate customers who send employees to the UK on business,” she added.
British Deputy High Commissioner Francis Campbell said the opening of the premium lounge service in Karachi would further enhance the UK Border Agency’s commitment to provide top class service to the business community in Pakistan and contribute in achieving the UK Government’s objective of increasing bilateral trade between the UK and Pakistan.

The United Kingdom is committed to providing a first class visa service to Pakistan. In 2011, UK received approximately 155,000 visa applications from Pakistani nationals and issued approximately 74% of them. This is wrong impression that United Kingdom is generating surplus income from visa applicantion fees in Pakistan. A major portion of UKBA's world class operations in Pakistan are still subsidized by the UK tax payers.
