Muharram 14 (Dec 10): Shias of Haidari Mohalla on Guru Mangat Road were not allowed by a Sunni, Shakeel Ahmad, to hold a majlis in front of his house. Muharram 22 (Dec 18): Two unidentified motorcycle riders in black masks fired six bullets at Shakeel Ahmad as he sat in a general store close to his house, killing him on the spot and injuring a passer by, Muhammad Shahid. The timeline of what seems to be a budding sectarian conflict does not end here. Infuriated at Ahmad’s murder, Sunni residents of the area started a huge protest against the Shiites of the area, burning shops, vehicles and goods.
They also broke glasses and set fire to two cars and a rickshaw. The protesters only calmed down after Ghalib Market Police Operations SHO arrived at the scene and vowed to arrest the murderers. Case was registered against five men while the complainant, deceased’s brother Zahid Irfan, held that his brother had started receiving death threats after December 10 when he refused to allow the Shias to hold a majlis outside his house and the dispute was resolved after the intervention of neighbours. The persons nominated by complainant in the FIR included Mahmood Shah, Bagga Shah, Yasir Shah, Aijaz Shah and Babbo Shah. No arrests have been made so far.
