PM says conspiracies being hatched to avoid Senate polls in March

Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Sunday said the conspiracies being hatched by some elements against the democratic government were aimed at avoiding the Senate elections in March 2012. Talking to journalists at the wedding ceremony of former Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president Asma Jehangir’s daughter, the prime minister discarded the memo scandal as a “non-issue”, saying it was being blown up unnecessarily. He ruled out the possibility of a military coup, saying his recent meeting with Army Chief General Asfaq Parvez Kayani was positive and that there was no threat to the democratic setup in the country. Rejecting the idea of a government led by technocrats, Gilani said, “There is no room for technocrats, caretakers or ‘chair-takers’ in the system.”
