The owner of the building, which housed the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) Rawalpindi, on Saturday claimed Rs 5.7 million from the authorities as compensation for the losses suffered due to the riot.
Around 1,500 enraged students on Thursday had set the building on fire against the BISE Rawalpindi’s ‘failure’ to announce Intermediate Part (I) result on time.
A senior official of BISE Rawalpindi told Pakistan Today that the owner of building, Attia-ur-Rehman, through her spouse Fazal-ur-Rehman submitted her application to the board chairman, seeking Rs 5.7 million as damage claim.
The BISE Rawalpindi is housed in a rented building against a rent of Rs 54,000 per month. The official said the application would be forwarded to the Board of Governors, which was the final authority to decide the matter.
When contacted, Arslan Cheem, the spokesman of BISE Rawalpindi, confirmed that building owner had submitted the claim. “We can’t merely rely on property owner’s claim, as we will get assessment from the government department concerned,” he said.
He said the relevant authorities had requested the Punjab Building Department to assess the damage and it would start the process on Monday. Meanwhile, a three-member committee headed by Professor Alamud Din probing into the ransacking of the building interviewed around 20 officials of board, who were present at the premises during the episode. The committee, headed by Asghar Mall College Principal Professor Alamud Din, was formed on Friday by Punjab Education Minister Mian Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman and the education secretary. Following the incident, police had arrested dozens of students for their alleged involvement in torching board’s building but later all students were released on late Thursday night.
