Failed suicide attack targets Afghan airport

A suicide attacker blew himself up in western Afghanistan on Tuesday after police stopped him from gaining access to an airport, a provincial governor said. The suicide bomber was killed but there were no other casualties from the failed attack at the airport in Qala-i-Naw, the provincial capital of Badghis, Dilbar Jan Arman said. “At around 11am (0630 GMT) a suicide bomber on foot tried to enter Qala-i-Naw airport, but was stopped by police,” he said. “He detonated his explosives. Nobody was killed or wounded in the incident.” Qala-i-Naw was one of the areas that Afghan President Hamid Karzai announced last month would be handed from NATO to Afghan security control as part of a phased exit of Western combat troops from the country by late 2014.
