Bossy boss end of story for young KU teacher?

A visiting faculty member at the University of Karachi (KU)’s Public Administration Department (DPA) resigned on Monday ‘after being pressurised to allow ineligible students for appearing in annual examinations by the department’s chairman’.
The teacher, on condition of anonymity told Pakistan Today, that she had barred some students from appearing in the semester examination due to short attendance but the chairman pressurised her into taking their paper and when she refused, he misbehaved with her.
The faculty member, who teaches the third-year DPA course ‘Management Ethics’, was seen walking out of the classroom with tears in her eyes due to the chairman’s attitude.
She said she had been teaching for the past two years at the KU as visiting faculty and taught students of different disciplines.
“I had short-listed some students who do not attend classes regularly, as ineligible for taking the exam. Among them was a student who was also caught red-handed using unfair means during the mid-term examinations. I had then taken him to the DPA chairman, who directed me to give him zero marks,” she said. “On [the chairman’s] order, I gave him a zero in his paper and submitted his exam copy to the chairman, who promised me of submitting the case with the KU’s Disciplinary Committee (DC).”
The teacher said that on Monday, when the said student came for taking the paper, she asked him to go out as he was ineligible and his case yet to be decided. “He was also ineligible because he had not attended the number of course classes as required.”
“The student started shouting at me and said the chairman had allowed him to sit in the exam,” she said. “I asked him to come to the classroom with a written permission from the DPA chairman in order to appear in the paper.”
“Later, the chairman called me to his room and as soon as I went inside, he started lambasting me, saying how dare you send a student to me for written permission,” the teacher said.
“When I said that the case of this student cannot be resolved as he is also ineligible due to short attendance, the chairman continued shouting at me and said that if you require a written permission from me, then you should also have sent me the names of ineligible students in written,” she added.
“I have decided to quit the varsity due to the rude behaviour of the DPA chairman,” the visiting faculty member said.
When approached for comments, the DPA chairman said it is the authority of the course in-charge to decide if the student can sit for the paper or not. “However, the teacher should also inform the chairman about the decision but she had not informed me in written.
Dismissing the teacher’s claims of misbehaviour, he said he had not misbehaved with her.
Condemning the incident, KU Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Shahana Urooj Kazmi said the teacher had informed her about the entire episode. “Although it is the teacher’s right to allow or bar the student from sitting in exam, I have asked her to allow the student to appear in the paper and later discuss the matter with the DPA chairman if the result should be issued or not,” she said.

  9. Definately a loss for KU, thats the main reason that we are well behind in every race of life, due to Chairman’s like these who in first place does not deserve to be called even teacher.

    Hopefully Senior Management of KU will do something and take legal action relating to Students and Misbehavior of the Department head, Whatever the case may be He shouldnt have shouted on a Female Teacher.

    I believe this same Lady Teacher is teaching in One of the Private University and was offered Job in Bahria University and DHA College as well. I doubt the eligibility of Teacher.

  15. This happens in all public and private universities specially after the contract system. Not only are the teachers pressurized to mark absent students as present, they are also forced to give students higher marks. The poor teacher do this for the sake of saving his/her job. That’s also one of the reason students these days get higher marks. A refusal from the teacher gets parents infuriated who pressurize the administration. The parents do not want to pay the high fees for course repetition. Moreover, they just want their children to get a degree. They have sifarish for the job.

    • I completly agree with and appreciate your analysis. Commercialism, insensible parents, job insecurity of teacher and semester system (i.e. teaching, paper setting and marking in one hand along with arbitrary power of sessional marks) has ruined our educational system. When we interview the candidates we find that we are generating useless stuff.

Sorry to say we are just talking about the chairperson and the teacher but what about the guy who started this whole scene , I belong to this department and I know this guy (khurram) he is not a good guy he use to bunk classes and involve in illegal activities and I have also listen this guy stolen CNG cylinders , many ppl in this dpt hates him due to his behavior , higher officials should dismiss or rusticate this guy because of 1 person DPA image destroyed.

    Such things happen due to lack of professionalism, HOD (Head of Department) should have behaved in the limits of standards of procedures (if there are any). I did not get any idea why VC allowed that student to sit in exam? Universities rules and regulations suggest that if a lecturer dont allow any student to sit in exam due to poor attendance, misbehaviour, incomplete assignments or other reasons, He/She has full right apply it. Behaviour of a student as he shouter on teacher may put him with red alert. He could be expelled from the university any moment. Same as the case with HOD , He should know how to handle his staff even in aggressive mood, Rather than shouting on them.
    The other side of picture is the power of MQM in karachi university, That student might be part of any political student union.This might be the reason , VC also allowed him to sit in exam where VC is appointed politicaly.

    • Wahab Sb, that Guy used the name of APMSO just to threaten the teacher, whereas when the Unit Guys got to know the news they were there and took action against that guy regarding how he used their name when he doesnt belong to them. it’s just Incompetence of HOD of Dept. Nothing else

  33. Dear all, want to inform you all that, Karachi University is in the worst of decay in every sector. Most teachers although highly qualified are deeply politicized and cannot bear pressure of their political masters. This man Iraqi is also the same. He suffers from emotional imbalance and start shouting while even teaching. We remember he never took class while we were in our 1st semester. K.U. is not a place for honest and hard working. Daily we see unknown faces in our exams who have never appeared in class on whose permission they are there, whereas we are grilled by every teacher for attendance. Aik se barh kay aik tohfa hay is Department main.

    • Mr Anonymous, if the teacher said class is off for any reason it's Teachers call. no one has to argue on that if the teacher is completing her duty (TEACHING) on time and completing the course.
      Given the Attendance point of view of yours, attendance is not the main issue, main issue is using unfair means to pass the exam, as well as threatning the teacher that i belong to AP and all that..

      Over all it would be nice if you would come out of your hole and write your name as well as i am pretty much sure that you must be the same student (Khurram) as so far when it comes to ethics and moral not a single person said TEACHER Was wrong..

      Next time try saying this to your parents too that Abbu/Ammi you are wrong .

    Hats off to your Ridiculous Comments!!!!!!!!!!

    First of all I would like to clear Ma'am Qanita's engagement issue. She casually talked about it and her ex fiance in the class as she was just providing a sort of counseling session to a couple of students who were facing similar kind of problems in their lives (no matter it was the student's personal issue but a good teacher is not only a course instructor, she was indeed a friend, a well wisher, a spiritual parent which a teacher should be and our religion also gives a rutba of Ruhani Walidain to a teacher) therefore she shared her experience with us so that we can learn a lesson from it. Its just your vilifying strategy to raise a finger on her extremely pure and innocent character.

    My second argument is on the H.R paper issue. As per the class, Ma,am Qanita devised a comparatively tricky paper than previous therefore, she offered a helping hand or just crude guaidance to EACH AND EVERY student who had some queries in the paper. Therefore your statement that she specifically help a student creating a biased soft corner towards him is simply absurd.

    My third argument. Any parties and celebrations of student's bdays or any others were a COLLECTIVE CLASS AFFAIR and she never cancelled a class for any personal student's parties. I am the witness as I am also a DPAian.

    I hope that the above arguments clarifies the B**l S**t (I do not want to mention any foul words as its out of eticates and as this article relates to Ms. Qanita, she always taught us to be polite and respectful to everyone) which the anonymous and his/her supporter D.P.A Owner has stated as I a the eye seen and personally experienced witness of this whole scenario which has been mentioned in this article.

    Ma'am Qanita, you are simply a wonderful teacher, our friend, our wellwisher and a reverent personality. May ALLAH (S.W.T) shower His countless blessings on you always.

The dilemma of KU where at Positions Vested Interest so called highly qualified are sitting/occupying to protect their "WRONGDOINGS" by helping the "MASTERS" who in their thinking are their "RAZIQ".As per PVC ACADEMICS,Teachers are in the KU only Because of Students and so as per PVC,it is the "DUTY" of the teachers to "FACILITATE" the Students.Facilitation means the one witnessed in this case and instead of taking ACTION the "WRONGDOERS" the Teacher was "THROWN OUT".This is the "COST" of Honesty,Rule and Regulation.KU has become a place for the last few years where Rule and Regulation has NO BUISNESS.The Chairpersons can take any Action with the support of likewise to Victimise the one who is honest or against Academic Corruption and Malpractices. May Allah Save my ALMA MATER from the Hands of SUCH VESTED INTREST Persons to whom the PRESTIGE of KU does not "MATTERS".
