Is independent cinema rising in Pakistan?

While members of Lollywood are still trying their level best to have Indian films banned, independent cinema it seems has begun to make headway in Pakistan. Shoaib Mansoor’s ‘Bol’ hit the charts for the longest time, followed by some lukewarm attempts by Lollywood through ‘Love Mein Ghum’ and ‘Bhai Log’, both of which failed miserably at the box office.
Now underway are two more films in independent projects. These include ‘Seedlings’, a film by Karachi-based Summer Nicks, and ‘Kaptaan’. Seedlings is utilising the talent of Mohib Mirza and Amina Sheikh both TV actors in the lead roles of the movie. Nicks, who is one of the producers of the film said that while Seedlings is the focus at present another film ‘Kolachi’ is also underdevelopment.
He said that ‘Kolachi’ is expected to enter the pre-production phase in early 2012. ‘Kolachi’ is also a collaboration of Pakistan and Australia, produced by Bodhicitta Works (Summer Nicks, Meher Jaffri and Craig Peter Jones) and directed by Mansoor Mujahid. Revolves around three intertwined stories and the choices each character makes in seeking redemption and forgiveness before their doomed fate.
Meanwhile, ‘Kaptaan’, another film, is also undergoing its production process at present.
The story follows the life of Imran Khan and the major events in his life including the victory in the 1992 Cricket World Cup, building a cancer hospital after his mother’s death, becoming Chancellor of University of Bradford, etc. Imran Khan in the biopic is played by Abdul Mannan and Saeeda Imtiaz will be playing Jemima Khan. This film will be released in February 2012.
Previously ‘Slackistan’, which could not be displayed in the cinema houses in Pakistan due to a variety of reasons, was also made. But the number of films which are underway at the moment seems to point out that perhaps independent cinema is on the rise in Pakistan and that maybe this is the only way that the cinema industry can be revived.

  1. For me these are unislamic, even the tv shows, considering hijab,,chastity,, root of other evils.. We should not compare ourselves with kuffaars,,indians..bad is bad, If I cant stop but I can say it,,to discourage these evils.. We are Al hsmdo-lil- Allah muslims belong to muslim country,,all film income is haram,, inspite of so much effort is done,,such as a dacoit loot someone by risking his life also but the what he loots is haram,,why not do effort thru which we get halal legal income..efforts are same but the actions make it haram. We dont want any movie to be allowed.. I am not an extremist,,but I try to be a better muslim,,or what is better for the country or society.. We can see rules of Saudi Arabia..same applies to us.. We should compare ourselves with India in technology,,defence..politics,,hardwork,education,,rule of law,, action against corruption,, follow good things from china, america,,elsewhere,, examples Malaysia, a muslim country but developed…why cant we? Actually we dont need this culture..trying for better developed Pakistan with islamics values. Islamic democracy is better than other democracies which are by name only,,not applicable to islamic country,,,turkey is example how they progressed,,but I cant say about religious practices.. We shall pick good practices from anywhere,,anyone & reject bad ones even from muslim countries… Excuse me if someone dont agree with me,,his choice…

  2. the problem in pakistan is that every art and cultural things are compared with islam here before zia ul haq period in which pakistan was a bit secular this was not the main issue but after awl this religious extremism it is almost impossible

  3. Today moderen cinema and good cinema needed in muslimworld and Pakistan cinema will rise if this will supported by goverment and Milloners and time is coming very near.thankyou.

  4. The media in Pakistan needs much more attention. On a private level as well as government incentive-based level. In contemporary times, media is what makes a people, nation or country look good or bad. USE IT ABUNDANTLY AND EFFECTIVELY, MY MUSLIM BROTHERS AND FRIENDS!!!!! 🙂

  5. why you Pakistani try to connect every thing with religion. Try to be secular. See Indians, they never bother about religion. All people work together and live peacefully inspite of their religion.
Just for example you can see just in a movie there are both Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain.. all working together. They even allow Pakistani artist to here and perform or act for example : veena malik, adnan saami, ali zafar, etc etc….
My only suggestion to Pakistani peoples is to grow up and be secular a little bit.

  6. For me, I would rather have NO industry than propaganda movies like Son of Pakistan and Bhai Log which preach intolerance, prejudice and conspiracy theories. As if the average Pakistani isn't illiterate enough, these conspircay theorists that put the blame of all Pakistani misgivings on "jews" and Americans teach us that self-reflection isn't and important trait at all. Why, when we can put all the blame on others? It's quite disgusting actually. All those who are involved in these projects disgust me. Be it Javed Sheikh, Moammar Rana, etc. Parhay likhay jahil. They are just raising a new generation of Mumtaz Qadris.
