Anyone for a free cataract surgery? The Chinese are here…

Following Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao’s announcement of sending a medical mission to Pakistan for conducting 1,000 free cataract surgeries, an eight-member Chinese medical team has reached Islamabad to carry out 500 free cataract operations across the country.
According to a handout issued by Pakistan’s Embassy in China, the team, led by Tongren Hospital Chief Physician Song Xudong, would carry out 500 operations in the first phase.
The visit is organised by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries.
Marking the 60th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations, the two countries are celebrating the “Year of Friendship” this year.
In connection to the visit, Pakistan’s Ambassador to China Masood Khan said the visit would strengthen the existing bond between the people of Pakistan and China.
“By reaching out to the common people and bringing sight to them, the team will leave an indelible mark in the hearts and minds of Pakistanis.”
He said such a gesture from China would fortify the existing all-weather and time-tested friendship between the two countries. The team would stay in the country until December 18.
