Karachi’s streetlights will be powered through solar energy under a five-year plan that would not only save electricity but also reduce expenditures, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation Administrator Muhammad Hussain Syed said on Friday.
“Investment in Karachi by foreign firms, especially in the fields of solid waste management, transport and infrastructure development, will be encouraged,” he said, during a meeting with Korean Ambassador Choong Joo Choi, who along with Korean Consul General in Karachi In Ki Lee, had called on the administrator at his office.
Syed said the measures taken by the government have brought improvement in the law and order situation in the city. “Presently, the citizens of Karachi are facing difficulties due to shortage of public transport and lack of solid waste management system,” he added.
He said that the government is trying to overcome these problems with the help of international firms including JICA. “Karachi offers huge investment opportunities in the solid waste management and transport sectors.”
The Korean ambassador said that his country’s firms are interested in investing in Karachi and further discussions will be held for this purpose.
