Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi said on Wednesday that Pakistan is a major stakeholder in achieving the objectives of peace and stability in Afghanistan and its absence would be felt at Bonn.
He was speaking to Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar through telephone. He expressed condolences over the loss of life in the NATO attack on the Pakistani check post along the Pak-Afghan border. He termed the incident a matter of great concern.
Hina Rabbani Khar briefed her Italian counterpart on the incident and its ramifications. She said that the attack reflected callous behaviour.
The Italian foreign minister thanked Hina Rabbani Khar for providing full clarity on the incident. He said that the two countries should continue to cooperate at international forums to promote political, cultural and economic ties.
The world will not come to an end if Pakistan does not attend the Bonn conference. Pakistan’s meaningful participation is secondary to a healthy mutually respectful relationship. We can not accept the status of the ‘most bullied ally’.
We fully appreciate the efforts the world community is making but whilst helping to stabilize a neighbouring country Pakistan cannot allow its own destabilization.
Please go ahead and we appreciate your emotions but the world has to do more for Pakistan.
Pakistan will be happy to attend and meaningfully participate in another conference whether arranged in Bonn or Zurich or any where in the world for this purpose.
