A sub-committee of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Human Rights has told all the provincial governments and the Islamabad Capital Territory Administration to submit their recommendations to the body on the establishment of Food Safety Authority in Islamabad.
The committee meeting was held here on Saturday at Parliament House with its convener, Fauzia Habib, in the chair. The committee was attended by Advisor to Prime Minister on Human Rights, Mustafa Nawaz Khohkar, Capital Administration and Development Division Secretary Junaid Iqbal, Islamabad chief commissioner, provincial health secretaries and other officials.
CDA Administration Member Shoukat Mahmand told the chair that the CDA had sent a draft bill on Food Safety Authority to Islamabad chief commissioner.
The chair was told that according to proposed bill, the Food Safety Authority would have 11 members besides its chairman, who would be appointed by federal government for a period of three years.
The authority would regulate and monitor the manufacturing, processing, distribution, transportation, storage, sale and import of food so as to ensure safe food for the public consumption at large.
According to proposed Food Safety ACT, the authority would have the power to impose two-year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 million to shopkeepers for selling substandard food items.
