Iran’s parliament voted Sunday to downgrade diplomatic and economic ties with Britain in retaliation for fresh Western sanctions imposed over Tehran’s nuclear programme.
A majority of 179 lawmakers voted in favour of reducing diplomatic relations by at least expelling the British ambassador. Four voted against, and 11 abstained. Debate continued on whether to stiffen the retaliation further.
The decision will have to go to Iran’s Guardians Council for approval before it takes effect.
