Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has expressed concerns on the government’s mismanagement of King Edward Medical University’s affairs. In a PMA executive committee meeting presided over by Dr Tanveer Anwar, the association demanded a regular vice chancellor be appointed at KEMU – which the government had failed to do since the creation of the university. They said the post had been kept vacant for over a year, to benefit a very junior professor, who was 96th on the official seniority merit list of the Health Department. The current VC had been appointed upon merit just because of political influence, a release issued by PMA stated.
The doctors demanded the Punjab chief minister (CM) appoint a regular vice chancellor at KEMU on the basis of seniority. They also demanded the CM restore King Edward Medical College , which should be a constituent institution of KEMU.
The meeting was attended by the Punjab Medical Teachers Association, Basic Medical Teachers Association, Pakistan YDA and Kemcolians Forum. It was decided that a campaign lobbying for the restoration of KEMC should begin today, and the office-bearers should make contact with high government officials in this regard. The executive committee condemned the efforts of victimisation of the doctors involved in the movement by the administration and asked the Health Department not to be come a part of it.
