Husain Haqqani is still Pakistan’s ambassador according US embassy website.
Despite the media reports that he is no more Pakistan’s Ambassador to US but “His Excellency Haqqani,” is written on the embassy website with his smiling-face photograph.
Haqqani resigned after a Pakistani-American Ijaz Mansoor claimed that he had been asked by Haqqani to deliver the President Asif Ali Zardari’s memo to the US former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen, seeking Washington’s help to rein the powerful army.
It indicates that his resignation has not yet been accepted but the Prime Minister has sought resignation from him as the spokesman of the Prime Minister’s office said that the Prime Minister was ‘pleased to direct conducting of a detailed investigation at an appropriate level and in the meanwhile he asked Hussain Haqqani to submit his resignation so that the investigation can be carried out properly.
“I have requested PM (Prime Minister) Gilani to accept my resignation as Pakistan Ambassador to US,” Haqqani wrote on Twitter.
“I have much to contribute to building a new Pakistan free of bigotry & intolerance. Will focus energies on that,” Haqqani said.
Haqqani, a close aide of President Zardari, was appointed Pakistan ambassador to the U.S. when the Peoples Party government took over in 2008.
Sources said that Pakistan has appointed Ms. Iffat Imran Gardezi as acting ambassador in the United States after the country’s ambassador Hussain Haqqani.
Iffat Gardezi has been serving as Deputy Chief of Pakistani Mission in Washington and has been assistant to the Ambassador in the overall functioning of the Embassy.
She had been dealing with both political and administrative issues.
