True love won on Friday in the court of Justice Mazhar Iqbal Sidhu of the Lahore High Court (LHC) when a girl of Okara openly chose her husband, a traffic warden, with whom she had contracted a love marriage, instead of her parents.
“I love my husband with whom I contracted a love marriage. I will like to live the rest of life with him,” Maryam told the judge in presence of her parents after the DPO Okara produced her in court, recovering her from illegal custody of her parents. The judge asked her to rethink her decision and tell without taking any pressure and the girl replied that she had thought and will go with her husband and not her parents.
The court allowed the girl to go with her husband, Humayun Shahzad, who had filed a petition seeking her recovery from her parents’ illegal custody after their love marriage. Earlier, the DPO Okara produced Maryam in court along with her mother. The court, addressing the girl, observed that her age was of studying then why she married against the will of her family. Some of the obligations were to be discharged by parents and their respect must be taken into consideration, the court observed. But the girl reiterated that she was an adult and married as per her choice and wanted to live with her husband.
Humayun Shahzad, on the court’s query, replied that he did not own any property. The petitioner said that he married Maryam on October 17, 2008 but before Eidul Azha, on November 4, his wife went to see her family who illegally detained her. He alleged that his in-laws, including his brother-in-law Usman Lashari and sister-in-law Amna Lashari, detained his wife. Humayun also contended that the life of his wife was in danger, therefore, directions be issued to police for her recovery. On the last hearing, the court ordered the DPO Okara to recover the girl within three days after the SHO and DSP concerned failed to do the needful.
