The US embassy on Wednesday celebrated 12th annual International Education Week (IEW) and hosted a ‘Window on America: an Educational and Cultural Exhibition’, encouraging Pakistani students to consider a US college/university for their higher education options. Collaborating with the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP), International Education Week is a joint initiative of the US state and education departments to celebrate the importance and benefits of international education in the United States and around the world. This year’s theme is ‘International Education: Inspiring Students Locally to Succeed Globally.’
International Education Week promotes the United States as destination of choice for serious Pakistani students interested in furthering their academic and research skills at some of the world’s finest universities. The US universities and colleges enjoy preeminence throughout the world, notably in science and technology. A record number of international students were enrolled at the US colleges and universities during the 2010-11 academic year, 5 per cent more than that of the previous year. Last year 5,045 Pakistani students were studying in the United States. “In today’s global economy, it is essential for professionals in all fields to have a knowledge and understanding not just of facts and figures but also of foreign cultures and societies,” said Thomas Miller, mission director of communication at the US embassy. “Academic opportunity is only one reason to consider studying in the United States. When students from different countries and cultural backgrounds sit together in classrooms, whether in the United States or abroad, they exchange new ideas, break down stereotypes, gain knowledge of each other and their differing cultures, and make connections that last a lifetime. This is a wonderful way to bridge differences between people, encourage peace and understanding, and build a stronger world economy,” he added.
International Education Week is an effort to promote programmes that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences in the United States.
