The National Assembly (NA) Secretariat received the resignation of former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Tuesday, an official source told Pakistan Today. On the condition of anonymity, the official said, “We have received Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s resignation.” Qureshi resigned from his NA seat on Monday and asked all ‘patriotic’ MNAs and members of Opposition parties to resign from the Lower House to seek a fresh mandate from people under a neutral caretaker set-up and independent Election Commission claiming the house had failed to implement its resolutions and the government had failed to resolve crisis in the country. By-elections would be held on Qureshi’s constituency if the NA speaker accepts his resignation.
Pakistan People’s Party Information Secretary Qamar Zaman Kaira said on Tuesday that by-elections will be held in Qureshi’s constituency soon. The election commission will announce the election schedule after the Qureshi’s resignation is accepted by the Speaker.
