Baby abduction case: accused remanded

Judicial Magistrate (South) Mumtaz Solangi granted the physical remand of a man, accused of involvement in the abduction of newborn, till November 16 on Monday and also sent two co-accused women to judicial custody. The Saddar police presented a trainee nurse, Sobia Saleem, and a couple, Akbar Awan and Farzana, for their alleged involvement in kidnapping of a newborn boy from the National Institute of Child Health (NICH), Karachi. The baby was abducted on the first day of his birth on November 4 after he was shifted to the nursery of the hospital for treatment. The police, on the complaint of the baby’s father, Rahib, registered a case and after hectic efforts, succeeded in recovering the newborn from the house of Akbar Awan in Model Colony on November 13. In the remand papers, the police stated that the nurse, after kidnapping the child from the NICH, handed him over to the couple for Rs 30,000.
