A photography exhibition opened at the Nairang Art Galleries on Saturday titled “Space, Light, Structure”, by Maryam Arif.
Maryam, a doctor by profession, dabbles in photography on the side as an expression of her inner emotions and self. Her photography which is basically in black and white is inspired by landscape, and as she terms it ‘land untouched by humans’. Later she began to be influenced by abstract aspects of photography that relay an idea in different forms, while architecture also became a very prime influence on her work.
Nayyar Ali Dada, owner of the gallery, acknowledges that photography has become an important medium. He says in modern times it has become a strong art form and art galleries have recognised it as a strong medium, and there have been frequent photography exhibitions. “Maryam Arif’s work has impressed me for its sensitivity and interesting compositions,” he said. “In particular, she has captured architectural themes very effectively. Her command on black and white imagery is very well expressed. I can see her grow further as a photographer…being imaginative, sensitive and creative in spirit.”
The gallery was replete with lovers of the medium, who came to see and admire the powerful work by Maryam. The exhibition will continue until November 16.
