Poultry prices shoot up after Eid

The price of eggs has increased by Rs 15 per dozen over the last one week and reached Rs 90 per dozen on Saturday, while the price of chicken increased after Eidul Adha and reached Rs 159 per kg. According to shopkeepers, the demand for eggs has not increased, however, the poultry suppliers have reduced the supply of eggs to increase the prices. “The price of eggs was Rs 75 per dozen on last Sunday and only in six days it touched Rs 90 per dozen, hence an increase of Rs 15 per dozen has been seen,” shopkeeper Javed Ahmed said, adding that the price may increase above Rs 100 per dozen in the coming weeks. The prices of eggs remained over Rs 70 per dozen this year, however the cost of production of eggs is around Rs 45-50 per dozen. It was learnt that there had been no increase in the cost of production of eggs but the prices are expected to increase further in December and January. Similarly, the price of chicken has increased by Rs 22 per kg in the last one week. The price was Rs 137 per kg on last Sunday, but has reached Rs 159 per kg now. “The consumption of chicken has reduced because of Eidul Adha and the prices went down but now the demand is increasing again,” chicken seller Ilyas said. The citizens demanded the government check the prices of poultry.
