With the end of Eid festivities, prices of vegetables and fruits have started decreasing at Sunday bazaars, to the relief of consumers.
The prices of all vegetables showed a visible decrease. Customers, however, criticised the provincial and district governments for not keeping a check on profiteers during Eidul Adha.
The prices of tomatoes showed a decline of Rs 25 per kg and were sold for Rs 65 per kg. Last Sunday, tomatoes were available for Rs 90 per kg, touching the Rs 100 per kg mark during Eid holidays. The price of garlic fell by Rs 15 per kg and it was sold for Rs 75 per kg.
The price of ginger decreased by Rs 5 per kg and it was sold for Rs 80 per kg. The prices of green chilies decreased by Rs 30 per kg and they were sold for Rs 50 per kg. The price of lemons reduced by 50 percent, as compares to last Sunday, and they were sold for Rs 40 per kg.
In fruits, the prices of bananas fell by Rs 5 and they were sold at Rs 45 per dozen. The price of apples decreased by Rs 15 per kg and they were available for Rs 90 per kg.
Consumers showed deep concern over the price fluctuation in the market, particularly on the differential between the pre-Eid prices, the prices over Eid holidays, and the sharp decline in prices post-Eid. “The hoarders increased the prices during Eidul Adha and the government did not take any action against them, which proves that the officials are not sincere with the citizens and only want to please the hoarders and black-marketers,” said Waseem Haider, a consumer, adding that government officials were well-aware of the profiteers but they had remained silent. He said every year profiteers deprived the poor masses of fruits and vegetables over the festivals of Eid through these tactics, but the government did not take action. “Rather, the government officials give full opportunity to the profiteers by not taking any action or adopting measures,” he said.
