Dengue: gone for now, but worse next season?

The deadly dengue virus is likely to loosen its grip on Lahore in the coming days as the temperature is expected to fall four to five degrees. According to the Met Official Ajmal Shad, dengue vector would not be able to survive after mid-November, as the temperature would fall from 16 degree Celsius to 11 or 12 degree Celsius in the coming days. On the other hand, medical experts said it was high time to take preventive measures as the dengue mosquitoes’ eggs could survive in the worst circumstances. Dr Salman Kazmi told Pakistan Today that the time had come to take measures against dengue eggs in order to get rid of the deadly virus. He said the vectors eggs could even survive in ice, and requested citizens and the government to clean all possible breeding places. He added that a severe dengue attack was on the cards during the next season, unless steps were taken to curb the virus, as lots of people who had asymptotic dengue this year would become victim of dengue hemorrhagic fever, if the dengue vector struck them again. Citizens were of the view that although the Punjab government had taken measures, it should take pre-emptive measures for handling a similar outbreak next season.
