Around four dozen Hindu couples tied the knot at a collective wedding ceremony held in Karachi on Saturday evening.
The event was arranged by the Pakistan Hindu Council (PHC) – a non-governmental organisation (NGO) of the upper-caste merchant class Hindus of the city – with the help of several cellular phone companies, banks and other companies.
The mega event was organised at the YMCA Lawn where the couples sat in a colourful mandap (temporarily erected covered
wedding structure with pillars) and a pundit (one adept in the Sanskrit language) performed the religious rituals of the wedding.
The PHC organises the annual event with the help of different companies, for which the NGO collects
huge sums of donations from these companies to provide the underprivileged couples with jewellery, beds,
quilts, blankets, clothes, utensils and televisions.
