Six people were injured in Lyari on Thursday after unidentified men on a motorcycle hurled a hand grenade in the area. The explosion was so powerful that it shattered windows of shops and houses as people ducked for cover. According to witnesses, a gambling den located in Joona Market was targeted. Some said the grenade was hurled at the members of the defunct People’s Amn Committee present at the den. Rangers and police personnel rushed to the site and cordoned off the entire locality. A bomb disposal squad also arrived to gather evidence. However, work was hindered by a blackout.
The injured – Mustafa, Asif, Abu Bakar, Nawaz alias Baba, Babar and an unidentified man – were shifted to the Lyari General Hospital and the Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK). South Senior Superintendent of Police Naeem Sheikh said the gambling den was not the target. Four men on two motorcycles had hurled a locally-made cracker at a snooker club that had resulted in injuries to six people, he added.
RANGERS PROBE: Denying reports of its personnel being arrested by the Anti-Car Lifting Cell (ACLC), the Pakistan Rangers-Sindh said the paramilitary force has started an inquiry against some of its officers due to their suspicious activities.
A Rangers spokesperson said an internal inquiry has been initiated after a civilian, who was arrested by the ACLC, hinted about the involvement of a few Rangers personnel in vehicle lifting.
The spokesperson said an immediate probe was carried out by the paramilitary force after the revelation and some Rangers personnel have been taken into custody on suspicion of their involvement in motorcycle theft.
“A departmental inquiry is under way and strict action would be taken against those found guilty. Moreover, the findings would be made public,” added the spokesperson.
