Former Test captain Salman Butt decided to appeal against his 30-month sentence for match-fixing scandal handed down by a British court on Thursday. Family members of fast bowler Mohammad Aamer will also appeal against his 6-month imprisonment sentence.
Speaking to the media, Butt’s lawyer Paul Harris said that on behalf of Salman Butt he simply want to confirm that they would be appealing the sentence and launching grounds of appeal against it in the next 24 hours.
He was speaking outside Southwark Crown Court, where Butt had earlier been sentenced for his part in pre-arranging no-balls during Pakistan’s Test match against England in August 2010.
Butt was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for conspiring to accept corrupt payments, with a two-year sentence for conspiring to cheat at gambling to run concurrently.
He was also ordered to pay £30,937 ($49,560, 36,050 euros) towards the costs of the prosecution, payable forthwith as it is already in the possession of the police.
Mohammad Aamer’s family members said, while talking to local media, that they will also appeal for pardon. His mother was very emotional while talking to a private television channel and said that he was just a kid.
When media went to Mohammad Asif’s house to talk with his folks, no one was available for response and the house was locked from outside.
